Another editor created an article in Greek on en:Velanidia (Laconia), Greece in the English Wikipedia, where it will probably be deleted. I do not read Greek, but I have taken the text of that article and added it to the Greek Wikipedia at Βελανίδια. It is only a stub. If you think that the subject of the article is notable, please expand it and assign it to a category, or merge the article into an existing one. --Eastmain 16:32, 24 Ιανουαρίου 2007 (UTC)
Greek Wikitravel Expedition
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Yia sas to all. My name is Evan, and I'm a Greek-American Wikipedian. I don't speak Greek very well, so I'm going to try to do this in English.
I'm one of the founders of en:Wikitravel, a project for creating a free, complete, up-to-date and reliable world-wide travel guide in multiple languages. We currently have active wikis in 16 languages (see http://wikitravel.org/shared/Multilingual_statistics for an overview) and projects to start several more (we call them "expeditions", see http://wikitravel.org/shared/Language_Expeditions for an idea).
Our newest expedition is to try to start a Greek-language Open Content travel guide. I think it's ambitious, but I also think that the success of Greek Wikipedia shows that this kind of project is possible. I'd like to invite people interested in travel, in new wikis, in promoting the Greek language, and in spreading Open Content in Greek, to review the Greek Wikitravel Expedition and consider helping us get it started.
Thanks for your time. --Evan Prodromou 02:32, 4 Απριλίου 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I'd also appreciate suggestions for other places to ask. Is there a "Greek Slashdot"? Influential bloggers that may help? Please reply here or on wp: el: my user page. Thanks.
P.P.S. If the Embassy is the wrong place to talk about this, please feel free to move this discussion.
Any Greek Wikisource users here?
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Greetings. I've imported a number of English translations of ancient Koine Greek texts into the English Wikisource. I'd like to import the original Greek texts into the Greek Wikisource, and link to them, but unfortunately I don't know Greek. This means I don't know the Greek versions of {{PD-old-100}}, {{header}}, etc. I've imported wikisource:el:ΚΛΗΜΕΝΤΟΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡΙΝΘΙΟΥΣ Α, and I was wondering if someone would be able to add the relevant header information to it for Wikisource texts. If so, I'll import many more there. (I can't find the embassy on the Greek Wikisource, or I'd ask there.) Thanks, -- Wikisource:en:User:Quadell

Nuts and oleaginous seeds
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hello Honorable members of the Greek Embassy, I need from your help I require what would be the translation in Greek for Nuts and oleaginous seeds, about the word Nuts I'm talking about all nuts and not necessarilly walnuts but also that would include for example almonds, hazelnuts, chestnuts etc. Greetings--Jaguarlaser 17:17, 28 Ιουλίου 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, "nuts fruit" (almond, walnut, etc) translates "ξηροί καρποί" (plural), "oil seeds" translates "ελαιόσποροι"--85.75.41.104 20:36, 28 Ιουλίου 2009 (UTC)

translation from " Hebrew " and " English " Wikipedia
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]hello everybody.
I wanted to ask if you can translate the following articles to greek wikipedia :
1 - גלידה מסטיק => (hebrew wikipedia)
2 - " Mastic (plant resin) " => (english wikipedia)
thank you, שחר1979 21:40, 10 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
- 1. If you mean the article about the Hebrew Wikipedia, it already exists. Take a look here. Dimitrisss 22:30, 10 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
where it exists in greek ? ..... גלידה מסטיק
שחר1979 16:15, 11 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
- Α! Ε πέστο βρε παιδί μου ότι θες άρθρο για τον Ντοντουρμά! Well, the article about Dondurma doesn't exist in Greek. I'll try to write some day (as I like dondurma a lot!) Dimitrisss 16:39, 11 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
If you look at the Hebrew article, you'll see that 2 kinds of ice cream :
1 - " Dondurma " ( turkish gum ice cream )
2 - " Booza " ( arabic gum ice cream )
What I wanted to show you that the article about " Mastic (plant resin) " that is about Greek . By the way, " Mastic gum ice cream " Created that they never Melt in the hot sun . שחר1979 18:16, 11 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
- It seems there is an erroneous interwiki mix. The article about the resin is μαστίχα (Mastic (plant resin)) and about the tree there is only σχίνος (the genus Pistacia, not the species Pistacia lentiscus). Unfortunately the interwiki for the tree leads to the article about the resin. --Geraki Talk 10:29, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
I do not understand. " Mastic " is something else, " Pistacia lentiscus " is something else. " there is also " Mastic resin " from the Pistacia palaestina that is also called : " Mastic " in the jewish books. the " Mastic " spice that Sold in the Middle East markets have some " imitations " like the " Almond tree resin " , " Pine tree resin " , " Boswellia tree resin " . can you help me understand what is going on here ? . שחר1979 18:29, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
in the article of " Pistacia lentiscus " the Bots " in many Languages is " Wrong " , Including Greek. There is confusion in many languages between " Mastic " to " Pistacia lentiscus " . שחר1979 18:34, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC) הצע תרגום טוב יותר
Mastic (in greek: μαστίχα) is a resin that we get from the tree Pistacia lentiscus (in greek: μαστιχόδεντρο - mastic-tree). The Pistacia lentiscus belongs to the genus Pistacia. It seems that there are problems in greek articles about φιστικιά and σχίνος and their use of common names about species and genuses. Other resins are not commonly called mastic. --Geraki Talk 19:07, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
in ancient hebrew books the Pistacia palaestina resin tree is called also : " MASTIC " ( MASTIKIN / MASTIKI in ancient hebrew ) . שחר1979 20:21, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
the greek article of " MASTIC " in " hebrew wikipedia " and " english wikipedia " is showing the greek article of : " Pistacia palaestina " and not the greek article of " μαστίχα " . שחר1979 21:54, 14 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)
why the link of greek did not show in the english wikipedia ? . שחר1979 18:06, 20 Μαρτίου 2010 (UTC)

a list of keywords
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hello,
I'm doing my project into language processing and I'm using Wikipedia. I want to use several languages in the tests, included the one of this versions. And since I need some articles to analyze I wanted to ask for your help. Precisely, some keywords I will explain now.
Actually what I am looking for is a list in your language with the names of those territories which represents an entity of speakers (therefore possible wikipedia contributors) of your language, the name its people or gentilic, and the name of the language (if it is the same language and it has a different name). These territories must be in practice independent from each others or at least be considered so by the speakers. This is the case of colonies, excolonies, other countries which historically speak the same language or minorities attached into the country next to yours.
For example, a list in english something like. "english", "england", "irish", "ireland", "scottish", "scotland", "british", "united_kingdom", "american", "united_states", "canada", "canadian", "australia", "australian", "new_zealand", "new_zealander". Probably there are some others which are not very big but I don't know cuz I'm not familiar.
If you were so kind to produce me this list, I would so appreciate it! Thank you very much!

Translation from English
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi Greek Embassy,
I have translated this book list en:Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century into Greek.
What should I call the page in Greek Wikipedia?
"Le Monde" is the French newspaper («Ο Κόσμος»).
Varlaam 20:39, 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
The 100 Books of the Century
The table is finished but it needs a title. Thanks, Varlaam 20:52, 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Varlaam. Le Monde is a newspaper name and it isn't translated, but transliterated: «Λε Μοντ». You should name the article Κατάλογος των 100 Βιβλίων του Αιώνα της Λε Μοντ. Best regards, --dead3y3 (συζήτηση) 20:57, 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
Just a proposal: "Τα 100 βιβλία του Αιώνα (Λε Μοντ)" (titles of foreign newspapers are not translated, just transcribed in Greek). --Ttzavarasσυζήτηση 20:59, 23 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you, guys.
- In English, we have several pages like this.
- I am going to use Τα 100 βιβλία του Αιώνα (Λε Μοντ) because it is very simple.
- If a newspaper in Athens produces their own list, then that page would be Τα 100 βιβλία του Αιώνα (Daily Athenian).
- The page has 3 short paragraphs at the beginning.
- In the languages that I know well -- German, Spanish, Italian -- I translated the 3 paragraphs myself.
- In other languages, I normally put the English text there.
- Then, in 1 or 2 days, a bilingual book lover will find it and translate it into the local language, Greek in this case.
- Will there be a problem if 3 paragraphs of English are there for 2 days?
- (Some languages of Wikipedia are very sensitive. I do not understand why.)
- Cheers, Varlaam 02:32, 27 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
No problem. It would be better to leave a short message in the discussion page about it. If you upload the page maybe we could help translating parts not already translated. Thanks! --Ttzavarasσυζήτηση 10:09, 27 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ttzavaras. That is a good suggestion.
- But ...
- I have created articles in 20 or 25 languages, and Greek Wikipedia is the only one that has a defence mechanism which I cannot defeat.
- You defeated Mussolini, and you defeated Varlaam.
- I concede.
- What do I do when I reach this page Επεξεργασία: Τα 100 βιβλία του Αιώνα (Λε Μοντ)?
- Cheers, Varlaam 18:13, 28 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC) (in Toronto)
Possible solution: Create the above page and add content with the copy-paste technique! --Ttzavarasσυζήτηση 18:58, 28 Φεβρουαρίου 2011 (UTC)
Foundation Images Policy
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Otherwise, for more details please visit http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Wikimedia_projects_still_using_non-commercial-only_images.3F Yosri 05:00, 2 Μαρτίου 2011 (UTC)

Ten years of Wikipedia in Asturian language
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Excuse me for not speaking Greek yet.
Oviedo, September 8, 2014
Next September 12 and 13, the Asturian Wikipedia community of users will celebrate with the support of [www.wikimedia.es Wikimedia España Chapter] the tenth anniversary of Uiquipedia, the free encyclopedia in Asturian. The events will take place in Auditorio Príncipe Felipe (Plaza La Gesta, Oviedo).
The first article in Asturian was «Zazaki», a minority language spoken in Turkey. That first edit was in July 26, 2004. Ten years later, more than 800 000 edits have been made on almost 20 000 articles, and numbers are growing every day with the work of tens of volunteers. And it doesn’t stop there: other Wikimedia projects in Asturian have developed, such as Wikicionary, Wikisource and Wikiquote. Managed by Wikimedia Foundation, all of them make part of a global movement that started in 2001 when Wikipedia started with the goal of delivering freely all human knowledge.
To commemorate this date, Uiquipedia and Wikimedia España are carrying out two days of celebration events so that the projects in Asturian are better known. Literature, poetry music and traditions in Asturian will be present. It’s free and everybody is welcome. In addition, Wikimedia España will have its annual General Assembly in Oviedo.
See here the schedule of activities.

Wikimedia España invites you to join the Monuments of Spain Challenge. And what’s that? It’s a contest. You have to edit, translate or expand articles about the Spanish monuments and you will be granted points. So you’re not just writing about wonderful buildings: you can get prizes!
The time of the contest will include all October and any information you may need is right here.
Join in and good luck!

WikiScienceCompetition 2017
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, yesterday a banner appeared on enwiki in USA making it officially "global", as far as I know. Sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, Russian Federation and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.
As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries (so, also in Greece and Cyprus) and I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday... and so on and so on. That's why I am here.
We prepared banners for many countries but on meta they say it is not wise to use them all, so if you want to use the style and do one here on your wikijust for few days, just inform us. In the end, the banner is not country-specific in your case.
Otherwise, if you have social media and you want to inform your friends and colleagues, the twitter hashtags are #WSC2017, #WikiScience2017, #WikiScience
Thank you in advance and whatever you do (join, inform, ignore) have fun!--Alexmar983 (συζήτηση) 14:56, 3 Νοεμβρίου 2017 (UTC)

Looking for new "translation of the week" volunteers
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi, as stated in this discussion I'd like to invite more users from various wikipedias to propose articles for translations on meta. Sometimes users propose articles they miss in their language edition, sometimes they suggest to translate topics they want to be known around the world. Whatever is the motivation, we need a plural approach and new volunteers are always welcome. The "translation of the week" is one of the most effective project for cross language content creation. So come and take a look. You can simply vote. Thank you.--Alexmar983 (συζήτηση) 12:50, 17 Δεκεμβρίου 2018 (UTC)
How to request a page to be made on this Wikipedia?
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Good evening to the Greek WP Embassy and its staff. My name is Christian, and I am a user of the English and Simple English Wikipedias. I am trying to research the work of a Greek Meteorologist, by the name of Dimitris Ziakopoulos (Δημήτρης Ζιακόπουλος). We do not have him on our local Wikipedias, presumably because outside of Greece, he's listed as not-notable; but in Greece, he is to my understanding, the longest serving weather forecaster on television - 29 years at the last count back in 2013.
He's noted for being a writer also, and I wondered if it's possible to ask for someone on the Greek language Wikipedia to make an article about him, please - presuming you can find enough information to use as a source! Your help in this would be welcomed. I would post the request myself in the right place, but I cannot speak or write in the Greek language (not yet, anyway - it's next on my list.)
Many thanks, DaneGeld (συζήτηση) 23:26, 6 Μαρτίου 2019 (UTC)

Ottoman Constitution of 1876 in Greek?
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]I read an academic book in English that the en:Ottoman Constitution of 1876 was translated from French to Greek at the time. I wonder if there are any archived copies publicly available online. It would be nice to link the versions of the constitution in the empire's minority languages.
Thanks, WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 07:40, 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: Hi. Does your source say it was just translated? What about "published" in Greek? I did a small google search, and I found nothing about it; not even an old publication, unavailable online but listed in bibliography. Perhaps it was a translation with very limited circulation, or available only to the functionaries of the Greek Foreign Office. ——Chalk19 (συζήτηση) 08:45, 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- The source that told me it had a Greek version is Strauss, Johann (7 Ιουλίου 2016). «Language and power in the late Ottoman Empire». Στο: Murphey, Rhoads. Imperial Lineages and Legacies in the Eastern Mediterranean: Recording the Imprint of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Rule. Routledge. σελ. PT193. ISBN 9781317118442. Page from Google Books. In Chapter no. 7. Volume 18 of Birmingham Byzantine and Ottoman Studies. Old ISBN: 1317118448. It also says there are/were versions in Armenian, Bulgarian, and Ladino (Judaeo-Spanish). I am also aware there is/was a version in Arabic. WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 16:18, 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)

- That's interesting that the document itself stated it was from Turkish (no mention of whether French was used as an intermediary language). I checked Strauss's statement and it cited footnote #27, seen on page 138 of the article from ISBN 1317118456, 9781317118459. The cited book chapter is : Strauss, J. "A Constitution for a Multilingual Empire: Translations of the Kanun-ı Esasi and Other Official Texts into Minority Languages." In: Herzog, Christoph and Malek Sharif (editors). The First Ottoman Experiment in Democracy (Wurzburg, 2010). Pages 21-51. I'll see if I can get a copy of that article. WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 17:45, 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- Found the book chapter: Strauss, Johann (2010). «A Constitution for a Multilingual Empire: Translations of the Kanun-ı Esasi and Other Official Texts into Minority Languages». Στο: Herzog, Christoph· Malek Sharif. The First Ottoman Experiment in Democracy. Wurzburg. σελ. 21-51. (info page on book at Martin Luther University)
- On page 26 is a section about the translations of government documents into French: the chapter says French was the only language used by educated people of all ethnic groups, and therefore the Ottoman authorities perceived the French translations as the most important ones. It also stated that the translations of documents into languages used by non-Muslims from Ottoman Turkish would have been difficult without the usage of French as an intermmediary.
- In fact in pages 35-36 Strauss stated that he analyzed the versions of the Ottoman Constitution and concluded that the Ottoman version was likely an original document and not a translation from French, and that because the non-Muslim languages don't have the linguistic features of Ottoman Turkish and the documents in the said languages don't produce them, they likely came from French, not Turkish, even if the document said it came from Turkish. ("The use of the word “Turkey,” is unthinkable in official Ottoman usage, but fairly common in French76 and also in minority languages (Tourkia, T‘urk‘ia, Turtsiya77, etc.) It occasionally even appears in texts said to be translated from Ottoman Turkish." from p. 36)

Question about Greek spelling
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]The Strauss reference I am using stated that the Greek version of the en:Dustur had the title Оθωμανικοί Κώδηκες, but modern websites use the title Οθωμανικοί κώδικες. Is the first an older spelling of Greek?
Thanks, WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 10:54, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: Κώδηκες is obsolete. ——Chalk19 (συζήτηση) 11:01, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! That really helps! WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 13:33, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
Another question: What is the Greek text from the law of the Vilayets? See page 72 (PDF p. 43) of File:OTHOMANIKOI KODIKES A.pdf and there is the Greek title of the en:Vilayet Law. WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 17:25, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
@WhisperToMe: Assessing the page that you gave, the page writes some Ottoman regulations about company and trade law. Nikosgranturismogt (συζήτηση) 17:32, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- @Nikosgranturismogt: Sorry for the confusion! See if the pages I posted here are for the vilayet or the company page. There's two different sets of pages, one that the book says, and one the PDF document uses. I meant to say page 43 of the PDF document, but page 72 of the book itself. The reason why I zeroed in on p. 72 is that the notes from p. 41 (PDF p. 43) of the "Constitution" article of Strauss stated: "In the Greek translations of the Law of the Vilayets the following terms are used:105[...]Cf. Nicolaides, Оθωμανικοί Κώδηκες, 72-88." WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 17:39, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: Here we have a different context. The first paragraph says that the general administration has its headquarters in the capital of the vilayet. In articles 2-5, it writes about the administrative division of each vilayet. The 2nd describes the division of the vilayet in districts, the 3rd describes the division of the districts in municipalities, the 4th describes the inclusion of villages in municipalities. The 5th writes for the division of cities and towns with at least 50 residences in quarters. The 6th article is describing the role of the prefects (vali). In the 7-8th article of the vilayet law it states that the employee in charge of the finances and logistics of the vilayet is named defterdar and some other things, including the mutual duties of the prefect and financial chairman and the creation of an accounting department. Articles 9-10 define the duties of employees appointed with imperial decree. In the 9th article it states: the vilayet's official mails and the vilayet's archive is responsibility of the mailing director (mektoupdzi). In the 10th, it writes about the employees, who are appointed by decree in proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, are in charge of the vilayet's external affairs. In the 11th article it writes some things about the public works department. Nikosgranturismogt (συζήτηση) 17:56, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- Okay! Thank you for the info! Since this seems to be the correct page, I would like to have the text of the title (only the title) of the section in Greek so I can add it to en:Vilayet Law (so people know what the law was called in the Greek language at the time) WhisperToMe (συζήτηση) 17:58, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: In the title, if you mean the given page (72), it writes "νόμος" with capital letters. If you mean this, in both 19th century and 21th century Greek it's the same. Actually it is the same since antiquity. Nikosgranturismogt (συζήτηση) 18:09, 17 Σεπτεμβρίου 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! Anyway I went ahead and added the Greek name to the English article. As for your notes, I added them to the talk page of the English article so they remain accessible to people researching the subject. Anyway I really appreciate your help! University of Crete: Making higher quality scans of Ottoman documents?
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]I found free-to-download copies of Ottoman documents at the University of Crete's website, but they have watermarks. See:

- Commons:Category:Legislation_ottomane (not all are from U of Crete - some are from the BnF or French National Library)
I wonder if anyone who has access to the university is willing to arrange to have higher quality scans, without watermarks, made?

Contributions by บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]User:บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย is a contributor based at the Thai Wikipedia who has created machine translations of articles and spamming them over a wide range of Wikipedia languages, including here. While the subjects of the articles he has created are (mostly) notable, the mistake of creating articles in languages he does not understand has led to extremely bad quality, probably at the level of unintelligibility. Unless local editors are willing to start a clean-up effort, I suggest that his contributions be deleted. Someone who knows the language can later write proper articles about the subjects. --Paul 012 (συζήτηση) 08:53, 11 Νοεμβρίου 2020 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Enotif body
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi,
An administrator should delete or update the page MediaWiki:Enotif body. It's a local version of a system message that was updated upstream long ago.
The best thing is to make sure that the translated version at translatewiki.net is correct and appropriate for the Greek Wikipedia, and to delete the local page.
If the translation on translatewiki.net is correct, but the Greek Wikipedia needs a local customization for any reason, please update the local version. However, make sure that all the words with $ in the beginning also appear in the source message in English. Some of them were removed and can no longer work, such as "$CHANGEDORCREATED".

Duplicate translation causing errors on Special:Log
[επεξεργασία κώδικα]Hi.
The page MediaWiki:Dellogpage and MediaWiki:Suppressionlog have the same content. Due to technical restrictions, as described in T361695, the pages cannot have the same content. This is because they are used in the dropdown menu on Special:Log and so having the same text for both log types causes only one to be displayed along with a server side error on every view to Special:Log.
One of the following needs to be done:
- Change or remove the override of the message on MediaWiki:Dellogpage. If you remove the override by deleting the page it will use the text Αρχείο καταγραφών διαγραφών for that message (that can be changed by updating the translation at [1]).
- Define MediaWiki:Suppressionlog to be something other than the content in MediaWiki:Dellogpage.
