Didima is a lowland village of the Argolida region of Greece. It is located in the south-east part of the region, in Ermionida, 12 km north of Kranidi. Didima is built on an altitude of 140M, in a small basin on the foothill of mount Didimo. Didima is the biggest village in the Didima community that contains 6 villages( loukaiti, pelei, rado, saint john, and saladi ) most of them are semi-mountainous and located around mount Didimo. Saladi is a seaside settlement, and made up of mostly vacation houses. It contains one of the largest beaches in south Argolida. North of it is located Saint John (agios ioannis) another vacation settlment. Didima belongs to the municipality of Kranidi, and its population in 2011 was 1.047.

With the administrative division of 1833, Didyma became the center of the municipality of Didyma that was established at that time. The municipality was abolished in 1841 and reconstituted in 1866. [1] With the abolition of the enlarged municipalities in 1912, Didyma became the center of the Didyma community that included settlements such as Rado, Loukaiti and Iliokastro. In 1997, with the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan, the community of Didyma was abolished and integrated into the municipality of Kranidi .

Ancient Years[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]

The village was recognised by Pausanias in the second century AD,It is written that the name of the village was Didima like it is today. It is also written that it contained the temple of Appolo, Poseidon, and Demetra as well as many white statues. Very few have been found today.

Medieval and Ottoman years[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]

it is believed that the village was deserted in the 3rd or 4th Century AD.

But the settlement was created again in the 7th sencury AD around an ancient well.There where 2 parts of the village, the upper and the Lower part.

Most Recent Years[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]

Didima helped as much as they could in the greek revoloution giving 33 people, after that the didima municipality was created wich lasted until 1912.

Population[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]

The population of Didima has remained stable in the span of the last two centuries.From 1879 to 1907 there was a notable increase in population, and again from 1928 to 1940. In 2011 there was a big population decline.

Notable Attractions of the Area[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]

The most important attraction close to the village are the Doline caves of Didima, they are in the shape of a crater.They were created with the caving of the land. In one of them there are chapels that were built in the byzantine times.

In Didima at Spring there is the tulip celebration as the Didima area is one of the few areas in Greece where Tulip grows naturally.
