Η Σοφία Βουτσάκη είναι καθηγήτρια ελληνικής αρχαιολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Χρόνινγκεν και ειδικεύεται στην αρχαιολογία του Αιγαιακού πολιτισμού και της κλασσικής Ελλάδας. Έχει διευθύνει ανασκαφές και έρευνες στη θέση Άγιος Βασίλειος κοντά στη Σπάρτη, ενώ έχει δημοσιεύσει έργα για τη κοινωνική αλλαγή, τη νεκροτομειακή αρχαιολογία και την ιστορία της ελληνικής αρχαιολογίας τον 19ο και 20ό αιώνα.[1][2]

Η Σοφία Βουτσάκη σπούδασε ιστορία και αρχαιολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (1979–84), ακολουθούμενη από μεταπτυχιακό (1984–85) και διδακτορικό (1985–92) στην αρχαιολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Κέιμπριτζ. Η διατριβή της, υπό την επίβλεψη του Κόλιν Ρένφριου, είχε τίτλο "Κοινωνία και πολιτισμός στον Μυκηναϊκό κόσμο: ανάλυση των νεκροτομειακών πρακτικών στην Αργολίδα, την Θεσσαλία και τα Δωδεκάνησα".[3]

Η Σοφία Βουτσάκη είχε υφηγεσία στην αρχαιολογία στο τμήμα Κλασικών του Πανεπιστημίου του Κέιμπριτζ από το 1993 έως το 2003. Εκείνη την εποχή ήταν ανώτερος υπότροφος στο κολλέγιο Νιούνχαμ. Από το 2003 εργάζεται στο τμήμα τεχνών του Πανεπιστημίου του Χρόνινγκεν και το 2011 έγινε καθηγήτρια ελληνικής αρχαιολογίας.[4] Είναι μέλος του Ολλανδικού Ινστιτούτου Αθηνών,[5] έχει διευθύνει ανασκαφές σε μούμιες της Μέσης Ελλαδικής Αργολίδας και του Άργους[6][7][8] και σήμερα διευθύνει την ανασκαφή στο βόρειο κοιμητήριο του Αγίου Βασιλείου Σπάρτης, καθώς και την έρευνα εδάφους στην γύρω περιοχή.[9][10][11] Οι ανασκαφές της στο κοιμητήριο του Αγίου Βασιλείου έχει λάβει κάλυψη από ολλανδικά και ελληνικά μέσα ενημέρωσης.[12][13][14] Η Βουτσάκη ειδικεύεται στην μέση ελλαδική περίοδο και ιδιαίτερα στην νεκροτομειακή αρχαιολογία,[15][16][17][18] και το 2015 έδωσε διάλεξη με τίτλο "Θάνατος, αποσύνθεση και αϋλικότητα: μερικές αντανακλάσεις σε πρόσφατες εξελίξεις στην νεκροτομειακή θεωρία και μεθοδολογία' στο 22ο Συμπόσιο Αρχαιολογίας και Θεωρίας.[19] Ερευνά διάφορα θέματα στην αρχαιολογία του Αιγαίου της εποχής του χαλκού όπως είναι η κοινωνική αλλαγή,[20] η διατροφή,[21][22] το φύλο,[23] και η οικονομία[24][25]. Επίσης ερευνά και την εφαρμογή της επιστημονικής ανάλυσης σε αρχαιολογικές έρευνες,[21][22] και την ιστορία της ελληνικής αρχαιολογίας τον 19ο και 20ό αιώνα.[26][27]
