Η πυραμίδα ηλικιών είναι ένα γράφημα που αποδίδει την κατανομή του πληθυσμού κατά ηλικίες και φύλο (αρσενικό, θηλυκό). Τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά είναι ότι οι γυναίκες είναι περισσότερες σε όλες τις ηλικίες και ότι (σε πληθυσμούς με μεγάλο δείκτη γονιμότητας και θνησιμότητας) η πυραμίδα των ηλικιών έχει σχήμα πυραμίδας. Η πυραμίδα είναι δημιουργημένη ως εξής: άντρες αριστερά, γυναίκες δεξιά, όσο ανεβαίνουμε τόσο μεγαλώνουν και οι ηλικίες.

Τύποι πυραμίδας ηλικιών

Στάδιο 1-πληθυσμός γρήγορα αυξανόμενος

Εδώ έχουμε πληθυσμό με υψηλό δείκτη γονιμότητας και θνησιμότητας. Ο μέσος όρος ηλικίας είναι μικρός. Αυτό το μοντέλο πληθυσμού το συναντάμε στην Ανατολική, την Κεντρική, την Σαχάρια και την Ανατολική Αφρική.

Στάδιο 2-πληθυσμός μέτρια αυξανόμενος

Εδώ έχουμε πληθυσμό με υψηλό δείκτη γονιμότητας και μέτριο θνησιμότητας. Ο μέσος όρος ηλικίας είναι αρκετά μεγάλος. Αυτό το μοντέλο πληθυσμού το συναντάμε στην Νότια και την Βόρεια Αμερική, τη Λατινική Αμερική, την Δυτική Αφρική.

Στάδιο 3-πληθυσμός σταθερός

Εδώ έχουμε πληθυσμό με μέτριο αλλά γρήγορα μειωμένο δείκτη γονιμότητας και χαμηλό θνησιμότητας. Ο μέσος όρος ηλικίας είναι μεγάλος. Αυτό το μοντέλο πληθυσμού το συναντάμε στην Κεντρική και Δυτική Ασία, τη Βόρεια Αμερική, την Ωκεανία.

Στάδιο 4-πληθυσμός που μειώνεται

Εδώ έχουμε πληθυσμό με χαμηλό αλλά γρήγορα μειωμένο δείκτη γονιμότητας και χαμηλό δείκτη θνησιμότητας. Ο μέσος όρος ηλικίας είναι μεγάλος. Αυτό το μοντέλο πληθυσμού το συναντάμε στην Ανατολική Ασία και στην Ευρώπη.
