Ύφασμα

Ύφασμα ονομάζεται κάθε υλικό που μπορεί να έχει υφανθεί. Αναφέρεται σε υλικά που μπορούν να χωριστούν σε ίνες ή σε νήματα, όπως το βαμβάκι, η κάνναβη, το λινάρι (οργανικά υφάσματα) ή ο αμίαντος (υφάσματα από ορυκτά), σε συνδυασμό με τις βελτιώσεις που επέφεραν τα συνθετικά νήματα.

Ο διαχωρισμός των νημάτων ενός υφάσματος ονομάζεται κλώση. Η λέξη «ύφασμα» μπορεί επίσης να χρησιμοποιηθεί και για το αποτέλεσμα της ύφανσης, για παράδειγμα, ένα σεντόνι μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ύφασμα. Ωστόσο, η ύφανση δεν είναι η μόνη μέθοδος κατασκευής και πολλές άλλες μέθοδοι αναπτύχθηκαν στα νεότερα χρόνια για να σχηματίσουν υφαντικές δομές με βάση τη χρήση για την οποία προορίζονται.

Διακρίνονται δύο μεγάλες κατηγορίες υφασμάτων:

• Παραδοσιακά υφάσματα: υφάσματα στα οποία βασικό ρόλο παίζουν η εμφάνιση και η άνεση. Σε αυτήν την κατηγορία ανήκουν τα ρούχα και η μόδα, αλλά και η επίπλωση (όπως τα σεντόνια, τα κρεμαστά υφάσματα, οι κουρτίνες, τα τραπεζομάντηλα, οι πετσέτες και οι ταπετσαρίες).
• Τεχνικά υφάσματα: σε αυτήν την κατηγορία ανήκουν τα υφάσματα στα οποία είναι σημαντικά κάποια μηχανικά, χημικά ή φυσικοχημικά χαρακτηριστικά και έχουν κάποια τεχνική εφαρμογή: τα γεωυφάσματα, τα ιατρικά υφάσματα και τα συνθετικά ενισχυμένα υφάσματα.
