Η αρχική άφιξη των Ρομά έξω από το Μπερν τον 15ο αιώνα, όπως περιγράφεται από τον χρονικογράφο Spiezer Schilling, σελίδα 749).

Οι Ρομά, οι οποίοι αναφέρονται επίσης ως Σίντι ή Κέιλ, είναι μια ινδοαριανή εθνοτική ομάδα που διαμένει κυρίως στην Ευρώπη. Κατάγονται από τις βορειοδυτικές περιοχές της Ινδίας[1][2][3] και κάποια στιγμή μεταξύ του 6ου και του 11ου αιώνα έφυγαν για να εργαστούν στις αυλές της Μέσης Ανατολής ως σκλάβοι ή με δική τους θέληση. Ένας μικρός αριθμός από αυτές τις νομαδικές ομάδες αποκόπηκε κατά την επιστροφή τους λόγω συγκρούσεων. Μετακινήθηκαν δυτικά και τελικά εγκαταστάθηκαν στην Ευρώπη, στην Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία και στην Βόρεια Αφρική μέσω του Ιράν.[4]
