Mercury, who was appointed to conduct her into exile, ravished her by the way, and she brought forth the Lares (8;. These deities not only presided over the highways,and the conservation of the public safety, but also over private houses, in most of which the Romans had a particular place called Lararium, where were deposited the images of their domestic gods, the statues of their domes-tic ancestors, and the Lares. Their festival, called Compitalia, was celebrated in January, in the open streets and roads.
