Η Βαστίλη (γαλλ. Bastille ή επίσημα Bastille Saint-Antoine) ήταν φρούριο με οκτώ πύργους που έχτισε το 1370, κατά τη διάρκεια του Εκατονταετούς πολέμου, ο Ούγος Ομπριό κοντά στο προάστιο Σεν-Αντουάν, στο Παρίσι.

Στην περίοδο της βασιλείας του Καρόλου Στ’ (1380-1422) χρησιμοποιήθηκε τμήμα της ως τόπος κράτησης. Σε πραγματική κρατική φυλακή τη μετέτρεψε ο Ρισελιέ, και από τότε είχε διατηρήσει κάποιον αριστοκρατικό χαρακτήρα. Μπορούσε να στεγάσει μόνο 42 φυλακισμένους, οι οποίοι έμεναν σε ξεχωριστά κελιά ο καθένας και ήταν κατά κανόνα μόνο ευγενείς και μεγάλοι συνωμότες κατά της κρατικής ή θρησκευτικής εξουσίας. Τους φυλάκιζαν εκεί με μυστικές διαταγές.
Εκεί φυλακίστηκαν κατά καιρούς οι Καλιόστρο, Μαρκήσιος ντε Σαντ κ.ά.

Η κατάληψη

Η κατάληψη της Βαστίλης

Σύμβολο της αυθαιρεσίας και της καταπίεσης, κατελήφθη από τον επαναστατημένο λαό του Παρισιού στις 14 Ιουλίου 1789. Ο διοικητής της, Λονέ, είχε διατάξει να πυροβολήσουν κατά του πλήθους που την πολιορκούσε. Στη μάχη που επακολούθησε, σκοτώθηκαν περίπου εκατό άτομα. Μετά την κατάληψή της, το πλήθος έκοψε το κεφάλι του Λονέ και κάποιων ανδρών του και τα περιέφεραν πάνω σε κοντάρια στους δρόμους του Παρισιού. Οι φυλακισμένοι ελευθερώθηκαν. Η ημερομηνία της πτώσης της Βαστίλης, που σήμαινε για τη Γαλλία το τέλος της βασιλικής αυθαιρεσίας, καθιερώθηκε από το 1880 ως εθνική γιορτή της Γαλλίας.

Η Βαστίλη σήμερα

Στην τοποθεσία όπου βρισκόταν κάποτε το φρούριο είναι σήμερα η πλατεία Βαστίλης, όπου υπάρχει και η ομώνυμη Όπερα. Η τάφρος πίσω από τη φυλακή προς Νότο έχει μετατραπεί σε λιμανάκι για μικρά σκάφη (Bassin de l'Arsenal), και προς Βορρά σε καλυμμένο κανάλι (Canal Saint Martin).
