Georgios Mikellides is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London. He has a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General and Liaison Psychiatry. Certified by Harvard and Maastricht Universities as a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation practitioner, he is also a PhD researcher at Maastricht University. He has an MD from Charles University.[1] He is a TV pundit in Cyprus[2].

Early life and education

Mikellides was born and grew up in Larnaca, Cyprus, where his parents are from Famagusta, the so called Ghost city.

Career

Mikellides had been an Honorary Clinical Lecturer for Queen Mary Medical School in London (2013-2016).[3][4] He is also an Honorary Assistant Professor for the University of Nicosia (2015- ).[4]He was an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Psychiatry, Maudsley Hospital, King’s College Hospital, London (2008-2010).[4] He was also a Special Scientist at the University of Cyprus (2017-2019).[4]

He is known publicly through his presentations on national media as a psychiatrist in Cyprus.[5] He is the founder and Clinical Director of Cyprus rTMS, a centre in Cyprus offering repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy and ketamine treatments.[6] His current research work and PhD are on the topic of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and ketamine treatment.[7]

Crimes and mental health

He often expresses his opinion as how mental health is associated on different crimes that are committed in Cyprus on National Cyprus TV and newspapers.[8][9][10] Also discusses the consequences of the different sex crimes commited in Cyprus as how the victim's mental health is affected by these.[11][12] Being the first author on the Community Treatment Orders: International Perspective and which has also discussed in a podcast with the British Journal of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK, has shed a further understanding on the use of CTOs internationally.He stated that CTOs are a useful tool for some purposes however its very important to be used carefully.[13] Speaking to REPORTER in October 2021 in regards to the Squid Game and how we need to protective towards children, Mikellides referred to some scenes in the series that can affect children, but also those who are more vulnerable in general, as well as what teachers and parents should do when they notice a change in the behaviour of minors.[14]

He publicly comments and advises the government for the essential need of establishing a forensic psychiatric unit in Cyprus in order to manage patients with history of severe and enduring mental illness with serious history of crimes.[15] [16]

COVID-19

Mikellides spoke on Covid-19 and related mental health matters and what could be done to manage these difficulties.[17][18][19][20]

He points out that the financial consequences from the restrictive measures and that there is link to mental health disorders.[21] He has given his point of view in regards to the restrictive measures applied in Cyprus on several occasions.[22] He has commented on the fact that the WHO believes that the mental health consequences from the pandemic would be worse than the Second's World War.[23] The COVID-19 has brought social stigma to people and different ways of management are suggested.«Κοινωνικός στιγματισμός ατόμων θετικών στον κορονοιό και μετατραυματικό στρες». He has brought to the fore how for second time the Greek Easter has been affected due to the 3rd Lockdown in Cyprus, this has a negative impact on mental health.[24] In a recent article, being a co-author he pointed the importance of measures that should be taken in order to decrease potential dangers to the elderly population in Cyprus due to COVID-19 isolation.[25] He has highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on mental health in summer 2021.[26]

Psychedelics

He emphasizes that Psychiatry is about to get into a major practice change as psychedelics are entering Psychiatry in research and clinical practice as they provide useful important clinical results.He has been using Ketamine treatment since 2019 which works in a similar way to psychedelics[27]

On repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation rTMS

rTMS has a major breakthrough in neuropsychiatry as an innovative therapy.[28] He has published a review on rTMS where he demonstrated the importance of its use in medical practice.[29]

On gender identity and sexual orientation

Mikellides and the Cyprus community expresses concerns in regards to issues on gender identity and sexual orientation due to the Orthodox Church opposition. [30] People should be free to expresses their sexual orientation and not to be isolated as the paradigm of Dimitra tis Lesvou.[31]

Elections

The media explores in the recent elections in Cyprus May 2021, the psychological aspect as how COVID-19 affected people in voting and what effects the recent pandemic had on the people's approach to vote by providing panel discussions, in one of these panels Mikellides was a guest who discussed these issues, people felt that their human rights were suppressed during that period and were reluctant to vote.[32]

Euthanasia

Public and parliamentary discussions are initiated in October 2021 in regards to legalisation of Euthanasia in Cyprus, the Orthodox Church is clearly against it, the Cyprus Medical Association, the Cyprus Patients Association, would review and take part in these discussions, Mikellides highlights the importance of the court proceedings and the safety mechanisms that need to be a part of this process.[33]

Learning and development

Participated in WHO meetings on Dementia representing Cyprus (Geneva 2017).[34] He had set up the Memory Clinic in Nicosia , which was part of the Cyprus Mental Health Services (2017).[35][36] Being the representative of Cyprus to the UEMS (The European Union of Medical Specialists (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes – UEMS) is a non-governmental organisation representing national associations of medical specialists in the European Union and in associated countries.)[37] and an educator by developing online training modules for the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK.[38] The module on rTMS has been in the top ten for a number of consecutive months by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2021.[38]

Research

He has lead an innovative research study that could be the first which compares Ketamine vs rTMS treatment in treatment resistant depression[39]A retrospective naturalistic study comparing the efficacy of ketamine and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment-resistant depression.
