His accession marked the beginning of the [[Schism|Schism (Split) of 451]] between the [[List of Coptic Popes|Coptic]] and the [[List of Orthodox Patriarchs of Alexandria|Eastern Orthodox]] patriarchs. In [[457]] the [[Monophysitism|monophysite]] party in Alexandria elected [[Pope Timothy II of Alexandria|Timothy II Aelurus]] as patriarch. Proterius was subsequently murdered [Evagrius, 2, 8]. |

Proterius of Alexandria (d. 457) Chalcedonian Patriarch of Alexandria (451-457). Elected as successor of Patriarch Dioscorus of Alexandria, who was deposed at the Council of Chalcedon [Evagrius Scholasticus, Ecclesiastical History (AD 431-594), Book 2, chapter 5]. Due to his Chalcedonian theology he was not popular in Alexandria. His accession marked the beginning of the Schism (Split) of 451 between the Coptic and the Eastern Orthodox patriarchs. In 457 the monophysite party in Alexandria elected Timothy II Aelurus as patriarch. Proterius was subsequently murdered [Evagrius, 2, 8].
