Το πυρηνικό ατύχημα του Θρι Μάιλ Άιλαντ, το οποίο υπήρξε το πιο σημαντικό στην ιστορία των ΗΠΑ, οφείλεται στη μερική πυρηνική κατάρρευση του αντιδραστήρα Unit 2 (TMI-2) του πυρηνικού εργοστασίου Three Mile Island στην Πενσυλβάνια των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών Αμερικής. Ξεκίνησε στις 4 π.μ.[1][2] της 28ης Μαρτίου 1979[3] και στη διεθνή κλίμακα πυρηνικών γεγονότων επτά σημείων, βαθμολογείται στο Επίπεδο 5, δηλαδή ατύχημα με ευρύτερες συνέπειες.[4][5]
Το ατύχημα προκάλεσε ανησυχίες και διαμαρτυρίες κατά της πυρηνικής ενέργειας μεταξύ των ακτιβιστών και του ευρύτερου κοινού και οδήγησε σε νέους κανονισμούς για την πυρηνική βιομηχανία.
Αιτίες
[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]Το ατύχημα ξεκίνησε με αστοχίες στο μη πυρηνικό δευτερεύον σύστημα[6] και ακολούθησε αστοχία (από ανθρώπινο λάθος) σε βαλβίδα ανακούφισης που λειτουργεί από πιλότο (PORV) στο πρωτεύον σύστημα[7] η οποία επέτρεψε τη διαφυγή μεγάλων ποσοτήτων ψυκτικού του πυρηνικού αντιδραστήρα. Οι μηχανικές βλάβες επιδεινώθηκαν από την αρχική αδυναμία των χειριστών της εγκατάστασης να αναγνωρίσουν την κατάσταση ως ατύχημα απώλειας ψυκτικού υγρού (LOCA). Η εκπαίδευση και οι διαδικασίες TMI άφησαν τους χειριστές και τη διοίκηση ανεπαρκώς προετοιμασμένες για την επιδείνωση της κατάστασης. Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης, αυτές οι ανεπάρκειες επιδεινώθηκαν από ελαττώματα σχεδιασμού, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των ακατάλληλα τοποθετημένων οργάνων και χειριστηρίων, της χρήσης πολλαπλών παρόμοιων συναγερμών και αδυναμίας του εξοπλισμού να υποδείξει με σαφήνεια το επίπεδο αποθέματος ψυκτικού ή τη θέση του μη λειτουργούντα ανοιχτού PORV. Έχει αναφερθεί ως κρίσιμος παράγων, που συνέβαλε στην παρακμή του προγράμματος υλοποίησης νέων πυρηνικών αντιδραστήρων, η επιβράδυνση που είχε ήδη ξεκινήσει τη δεκαετία του 1970.[9] Η μερική κατάρρευση του Αντιδραστήρα ΙΙ είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την απελευθέρωση (άγνωστης ποσότητας) ραδιενεργών αερίων και ραδιενεργού ιωδίου στο περιβάλλον.
Παρενέργειες
[Επεξεργασία | επεξεργασία κώδικα]Ακτιβιστές κατά του πυρηνικού κινήματος εξέφρασαν ανησυχίες για τις περιφερειακές επιπτώσεις στην υγεία των πολιτών από το ατύχημα.[10] Ορισμένες επιδημιολογικές μελέτες που ανέλυσαν το ποσοστό του καρκίνου στην ευρύτερη περιοχή μετά το ατύχημα, διαπίστωσαν ότι δεν υπήρξε στατιστικά σημαντική αύξηση στο ποσοστό του, ενώ άλλες μελέτες υποστηρίζουν ακριβώς το αντίθετο. Ωστόσο, λόγω της φύσης τους, τέτοιες μελέτες δεν μπορούν να καθορίσουν με βεβαιότητα εάν υπήρχε ή όχι αιτιώδης σύνδεση που συνδέει το ατύχημα με αυτούς τους καρκίνους.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]
Η εκκαθάριση του αντιδραστήρα ξεκίνησε τον Αύγουστο του 1979 και ολοκληρώθηκε επίσημα τον Δεκέμβριο του 1993, με συνολικό κόστος καθαρισμού -τότε- γύρω στο 1 δισεκατομμύριο δολάρια.[18]
