Ο Ιωάννης ο Φιλόπονος (περ. 490 - περ. 570) ήταν Έλληνας Χριστιανός φιλόσοφος, θεολόγος και φυσικός επιστήμονας.

Γεννήθηκε περί το 490 στην Αλεξάνδρεια και ήταν γόνος χριστιανικής οικογένειας. Σχετικά με τη ζωή του δεν υπάρχουν πολλές πληροφορίες. Έζησε στην Αλεξάνδρεια, όπου και σπούδασε στη φιλοσοφική σχολή της πόλης κοντά στον νεοπλατωνικό Αμμώνιο Ερμεία, τα μαθήματα του οποίου παρακολουθούσαν και χριστιανοί. Αργότερα δίδαξε και ο ίδιος φιλολογία και φιλοσοφία. Μετά τον θάνατο του Αμμωνίου το 520 περίπου, ο Ιωάννης επιμελήθηκε τα σχόλια του Αμμωνίου πάνω στον Αριστοτέλη. Απεβίωσε γύρω στο 570[9].

Όσον αφορά το προσωνύμιο Φιλόπονος αυτό αναφέρεται είτε στην εργατικότητά του είτε στην ιδιότητά του ως μέλος της χριστιανικής αδελφότητας των Φιλοπόνων[9]. Ο ίδιος χρησιμοποιούσε το όνομα «ο γραμματικός» και σε χειρόγραφα φέρεται ως «Ιωάννης Αλεξανδρεύς» ενώ από τους αντιπάλους του ονομαζόταν χλευαστικά ως «ματαιόπονος»[10].

Σε αυτόν αποδίδεται η ανακάλυψη του νόμου της ελεύθερης πτώσης, σε διαφοροποίηση από την μέχρι τότε κυρίαρχη Αριστοτελική παράδοση, αν και συνήθως παίρνει λανθασμένα τα εύσημα για αυτή την ανακάλυψη ο Γαλιλαίος.[11] Επίσης ανέπτυξε τη «θεωρία της ώθησης» που προηγήθηκε της θεωρίας της αδράνειας.[11]

Αρχικά ο Φιλόπονος συνέταξε κυρίως σχόλια πάνω στα έργα του Αριστοτέλη, το περί ψυχής, περί των κατηγοριών, περί γενέσεως και φθοράς, περί φυσικής, αναλυτικά πρότερα, αναλυτικά ύστερα και μετεωρολογικά. Συνέταξε επίσης δύο επιστολές προς τους φιλοσόφους Πρόκλο και Σιμπλίκιο. Αργότερα ο Φιλόπονος έγραψε έργα θεολογικού περιεχομένου.
