Povenmire drew inspiration for the show from his boyhood in Mobile, Alabama.[1]

The show follows the adventures of stepbrothers Phineas Flynn (Vincent Martella) and Ferb Fletcher (Thomas Sangster), who live in the fictional town of Danville, in the Tri-State area. Their older sister, Candace Flynn (Ashley Tisdale), has two obsessions: "busting" Phineas and Ferb's schemes and ideas, and winning the attention of a boy named Jeremy (Mitchel Musso).[2] Meanwhile, the boys' pet platypus, Perry, acts as a secret agent for an all-animal government organization[3][4] called the O.W.C.A. ("Organization Without a Cool Acronym"), fighting Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz.[5]

Much of the series' humor relies on running gags used in almost every episode, with slight variation.[6] Most episodes follow a pattern:

  • Some incident gives Phineas an idea for a project, and he announces, "Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!"
  • Meanwhile Perry slips away, using one of many hidden tunnels, to a secret underground base. Phineas (or occasionally another character) remarks, "Hey, where's Perry?"
  • Major Monogram briefs Perry (whom he calls "Agent P") on his mission; this sometimes amounts to nothing more than "Doctor Doofenshmirtz is up to something; find out what it is, and stop it!"
  • Candace sees what the boys are doing, and resolves to tell Mom.
  • Perry breaks into the skyscraper office of Doofenschmirtz Evil Inc. (complete with its own easy listening jingle). Doofenschmirtz traps Perry and explains his current evil plan. Perry escapes the trap and they battle.
  • Phineas and Ferb complete their project.
  • Mom gets home and Candace thinks that, at last, Mom will see what the boys have been up to and believe her. But just as Mom is about to step into the back yard, all evidence vanishes, usually as a side effect of Doofenschmirtz's device.[5][6]
  • Doofenschmirtz, foiled again, cries out, "Curse you Perry the Platypus!"

Other running gags:

  • An adult asks Phineas if he is rather young to be performing some complex activities; he responds, "Yes, yes I am." This is often parodied.
  • Doofenshmirtz's names for his contraptions all have the same suffix, "-inator", as in Shrinkinator, Giant Dog Biscuit-inator, "Eradicate Rodney's -Inator", etc.[7] Eventually he starts calling them "inators" as a generic term.
  • Doofenshmirtz has a daughter, Vanessa, who generally finds his work boring, but sometimes tries to prove to her mother that he is evil. Like Candace, she always fails.
  • Ferb rarely speaks more than once in an episode.
  • Isabella, who has a crush on Phineas, comes into the backyard and asks, "Whatcha doin'?" in a distinctive singsong tone. (In "Suddenly Suzy", after both Suzy and Candace speak that line, Isabella grumbles, "Do I even need to be here?")

Aspects of the show's humor are aimed at adults,[8] including its frequent pop-cultural references.[9] Co-creator Dan Povenmire, who had previously worked on Family Guy, sought to create a less raunchy show that would make similar use of comic timing, metahumor, humorous blank stares, wordplay and breaking the Fourth wall.[10] Povenmire describes the show as a combination of Family Guy and SpongeBob SquarePants.[11] Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, the other co-creator, said the show was not created just for kids; he simply did not exclude them as an audience.[8]

Χαρακτήρες

Φινέας Φλιν

Ο Φινέας Φλιν (voiced by Vincent Martella) Like other characters, his age is not mentioned. Phineas, along with his stepbrother Ferb Fletcher, star in the A-Plot of every episode. The series concerns Phineas's attempts to avoid boredom by finding something new to do every day of the summer vacation. He does this with his less-talkative stepbrother Ferb,[12] and often with many other neighborhood children. He is known to be very selfless and energetic. Phineas has many catch phrases like "Oh, there you are, Perry" or "Hey, Ferb! I know what we're going to do today!" and "Hey, where's Perry?".

Phineas comes from a blended family. The creators chose this arrangement because they considered it underused in children's programming as well as from Marsh's experiences in one.[13] As a character, Phineas has received a positive critical response, with one reviewer describing him and his brother as a "comical pairing."[14] Phineas appears in Phineas and Ferb merchandise, including plush toys,[15] t-shirts,[16] and a video game.[17]

Φερμπ Φλέτσερ

Ο Φερμπ Φλέτσερ (voiced by Thomas Sangster) is Phineas's green-haired, intelligent but laconic stepbrother from the United Kingdom and created by Phineas and Ferb co-founders Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. He first appeared in the show's pilot episode, "Rollercoaster."

Ferb and his stepbrother Phineas Flynn spend their days during their summer vacation having fun. They are featured in every episode's A-Plot constructing large scale inventions or taking part in other outlandish activities. Ferb, an engineering genius, allows Phineas to do most of the talking for the pair and is described as "more of a man of action," by Phineas, which makes him more of a plot device than a developed character. Ferb is more likely to sing than speak, but most often has a one-liner in the episodes. Ferb is named after a friend of the show's creators who was an expert on tools and, at times, stayed rather silent.[18]

Κάντας Φλιν

Η Κάντας Φλιν (voiced by Ashley Tisdale) is Phineas's fifteen-year-old older sister and Ferb's stepsister.[7] She first appeared in the pilot episode along with the other main characters who star in the A-Plot in which she is usually the main antagonist. Candace does not approve of the inventions her brothers create, and in almost every episode she attempts to "bust her brothers" by showing their mom. Her best friend is Stacy Hirano; Candace also has an obvious crush on Jeremy Johnson, but for a long time she was oblivious to the fact he liked her back. As a character, she has received a positive critical acclaim, having appeared in other media such as video games.[19][20]

Πέρρυ ο πλατύποδας

Ο Πέρρυ ο πλατύποδας (vocal effects by Dee Bradley Baker), a.k.a. Agent P, is Phineas and Ferb's pet platypus and first appeared along with a large portion of the main cast in the pilot episode "Rollercoaster." Perry is featured as the star of the B-Plot for all but one episode of the series alongside his arch-nemesis Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. He is a primarily silent character, with the only noises being the occasional rattling of his bill. Perry is often referred to, incorrectly, by Ferb as "the only mammal that lays eggs."[21]

In Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, an alternate reality (yet more evil and ruthless) version of Perry (known as Platyborg) appears as the secondary antagonist, with the regular Perry serving as a supporting protagonist. Platyborg would later return in the episode sequel, Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension, this time, as a supporting protagonist.

Δόκτωρ Ντούφενσμιρτζ

Ο Δρ. Χάινζ Ντούφενσμιρτζ (voiced by Dan Povenmire) is a mad scientist appearing in all but one episode's B-Plots thus far. He is the father to teenage Vanessa Doofenshmirtz and is the head of his own company, Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc. Depending on the episode, Dr. Doofenshmirtz's main goal is to either destroy or rule the Tri-State Area which was suggested to him as a starting point before trying to take over the world.[22] Routinely bumbling, incompetent, and forgetful, almost all of Doofenshmirtz's plans—always involving various gadgets and inventions—have been thwarted by Perry the Platypus. However, a few of his schemes were quite successful in nature, such as in the 2014 special Phineas and Ferb Save Summer when Doofenshmirtz succeeded in moving the Earth away from its original orbit to an early autumn, much to Perry's distraught. After most defeats, he shouts his catchphrase, "Curse you, Perry the Platypus!" His first invention as a child was simply called "Inator"[23] which led to his modern contraptions usually ending with the suffix of the same name.

Throughout the series, Doofenshmirtz's flashbacks (which are often shown after Perry has been captured) explore his mentally abusive and lonely childhood growing up in the fictional village Gimmelshtump, Druelselstein. Before becoming an evil scientist, Doofenshmirtz was a bratwurst vendor until being put out of business by the hot dog industry. Doofenshmirtz usually monologues[13] and displays acts of cartoon-style physical violence[24] towards his nemesis Perry, a skilled anthropomorphic platypus secret agent. Doofenshmirtz appears in several merchandise pieces, particularly the book series,[25][26][27][28] and the video game.[17]

In the 2011 TV film, Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, an alternate reality (yet more intelligent and successful) version of Dr. Doofenshmirtz appears as the main antagonist, with the regular Doctor Doofenshmirtz serving as a supporting character. 2nd Doofenshmirtz later returns in the episode sequel, Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension, as one of the main antagonists (the other is his wife 2nd Charlene).
