Λέοναρντ Μπλούμφιλντ

Ο Λέοναρντ Μπλούμφιλντ (αγγλικά: Leonard Bloomfield) (1 Απριλίου, 1887 - 18 Απριλίου, 1949) ήταν Αμερικανός γλωσσολόγος, ο οποίος συνέβαλε ιδιαίτερα στην ανάπτυξη του κινήματος του Αμερικανικού δομισμού (American structuralism), μεταξύ των δεκαετιών 1930 και 1950. Αποφοίτησε από το Πανεπιστήμιο Χάρβαρντ ενώ σπούδασε και στα Πανεπιστήμια του Γουισκόνσιν και του Σικάγο. Μελέτησε πολύ τα γερμανικά και εργάστηκε ως καθηγητής γερμανικών στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Σικάγο και το Πανεπιστήμιο του Ιλινόις. Αργότερα άρχισε να ενδιαφέρεται για την περιγραφή της γλώσσας. Το βιβλίο του Language (1933), αποτελεί ακόμη και σήμερα ένα από τα σημαντικότερα γλωσσολογικά βιβλία.

Οι απόψεις του Μπλούμφιλντ σχετικά με τη γλώσσα είχαν επηρεαστεί από τις αρχές του συμπεριφορισμού (behaviorism), καθώς και από την πεποίθηση ότι η ανάλυση της γλώσσας πρέπει να γίνεται με βάση τη μορφή περισσότερο και όχι τόσο το περιεχόμενο, και να ακολουθεί τους κανόνες της επιστημονικής μεθοδολογίας. Η επιρροή του κινήματος του Αμερικανικού δομισμού στην επιστήμη της γλωσσολογίας άρχισε να μειώνεται από το τέλος της δεκαετίας του 1950 και έπειτα, με την εμφάνιση της θεωρίας της γενετικής-μετασχηματιστικής γραμματικής (generative-transformational grammar) του Νόαμ Τσόμσκι.

Ο Μπλούμφιλντ επίσης, ερεύνησε σε βάθος τις γλώσσες των ιθαγενών της Αμερικής και συγκεκριμένα ασχολήθηκε με τη μελέτη της γλώσσας Algonquian.
