Το Βιβλίο του Κελς είναι χειρόγραφο ευαγγελικό κείμενο στην λατινική γλώσσα, το οποίο περιλαμβάνει τα τέσσερα Ευαγγέλια της Καινής Διαθήκης μαζί με διάφορα προπαρασκευαστικά κείμενα και πίνακες. Δημιουργήθηκε σε ένα μοναστήρι στην Σκωτία, στην Αγγλία ή στην Ιρλανδία και ενδέχεται να περιέχει συνεισφορές από διάφορα ιδρύματα και οργανισμούς για καθεμιά από αυτές τις περιοχές. Πιστεύεται ότι δημιουργήθηκε γύρω στο 800 μΧ. Το κείμενο προέρχεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τα βουλγάτα, αν και περιλαμβάνει πολλά αποσπάσματα από παλαιότερες εκδόσεις της Βίβλου. Πρόκειται για αριστούργημα της δυτικής καλλιγραφίας και αντιπροσωπεύει το αποκορύφωμα του διαφωτισμού. Θεωρείται ευρέως ως ένας από τους καλύτερους εθνικούς θησαυρούς της Ιρλανδίας. Αυτό το χειρόγραφο βιβλίο πήρε το όνομά του από το μοναστήρι του Κελς, το οποίο αποτέλεσε το σπίτι του για αιώνες.

Η εικονογράφηση και η διακόσμηση του βιβλίου του Κελς ξεπερνά τις αντίστοιχες άλλων ευαγγελικών βιβλίων ως προς την υπερβολή και την πολυπλοκότητα. Η διακόσμηση συνδυάζει την χριστιανική εικονογραφία με τα περίτεχνα μοτίβα της νησιωτικής τέχνης. Φιγούρες ανθρώπων, ζώων και μυθικών θηρίων, μαζί με κέλτικα μοτίβα σε έντονα χρώματα, ζωντανεύουν τις σελίδες του χειρογράφου. Πολλά από τα δευτερεύοντα διακοσμητικά στοιχεία διαποτίζονται με χριστιανικό συμβολισμό και τονίζουν περαιτέρω τα θέματα των εικονογραφήσεων.

Το χειρόγραφο σήμερα περιλαμβάνει 340 σελίδες και 680 φύλλα εμπρός-πίσω. Από το 1953 κυκλοφορεί σε τέσσερις τόμους, των 330 χιλιοστομέτρων (13 ίντσες). Οι σελίδες είναι υψηλής ποιότητας ; η άνευ προηγουμένου περίτεχνη διακόσμηση περιλαμβάνει δέκα εικονογραφήσεις πλήρους σελίδας και σελίδες με κείμενο που είναι διακοσμημένο με μινιατούρες. Το κείμενο φαίνεται να είναι έργο τουλάχιστον τριών διαφορετικών συγγραφέων. Τα γράμματα είναι από μελάνι σιδήρου και τα χρώματα προέρχονται από ένα ευρύ φάσμα ουσιών, μερικές από τις οποίες εισήχθησαν από μακρινές χώρες.
